IMISA aims to promote and support professional and personal development in Mindfulness practice by:
1.1 Developing a forum within which individuals who are practicing mindfulness or have an interest in mindfulness may network, share ideas and develop a sense of community.
1.2 Developing a forum for the exchange of mindfulness-based skills.
1.3 Developing and implementing mechanisms to support the active supervision of those practicing mindfulness in diverse contexts.
1.4 Developing awareness, values and credibility of mindfulness practices in diverse contexts.
1.5 Affirming the intentional cultivation of the inner life of the individual as central to teaching and learning.
1.6 Developing frameworks to support the development of individuals who, by virtue of history, have limited access to resources, and who demonstrate appropriate interest and ability.
1.7 Developing and maintaining affiliations with international organisations similarly committed to the development and integration of mindfulness into healthcare and society.
1.8 Developing, implementing and providing for members compliance with a code of ethics. (See Code of Ethics).
1.9 Providing a central resource of information, research and relevant reference material on mindfulness, and facilitating access to such information by members.
1.10 Maintaining and administering a central register of members and their areas of interest and professional training.
1.11 Being recognised as an umbrella organisation supporting collaboration between mindfulness practitioners.
2. IMISA shall not undertake the following roles:
2.1 IMISA shall not engage with or deliver services to patients or clients, neither directly nor indirectly.
2.2 Assess or certify competence of members against qualifications, whether registered or not with South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) or similar organisations.
2.3 Establish, manage or organise any other business venture, except in direct support of the above-specified objectives, and not otherwise being in conflict with the provisions of this constitution, and not involving the personal interest of any office-bearer of this institute.
2.4 Lend or invest funds to/in any member or office-bearer or any other individual or organisation.
2.5 Act as an employment broker, other than to provide the public with baseline database information on members, without express or implied warranty as to the competence or suitability of such members.
2.6 Define or recommend any professional fee or tariff structure for any member or other individual utilising and/or teaching a MBI.
